Detroit to Sault Ste Marie, Michigan - Motorcycle June 2010. Rode 790 miles in a little over 34 hours. I left Detroit the morning of June 7 a few minutes after 9am. Rode to Mackinac City for some shots. Got to Straits State Park a little after 2pm. On the way up, I found some fun two-tracks out in the woods. Very entertaining on a loaded cruiser; especially the deep sand bogs. I crossed the Mac Bridge three times that night. After setting up my camping stuff, I rode to Sault Ste Marie. Rode 443 miles on Monday, my longest day of riding by nearly 200 miles. My plan was to ride through Thursday. My destination on day two was Sheboygan, Wisconsin. After getting the latest weather report, my plans changed. Tahquemenon Falls would be my destination after cruising the Pictured Rocks Lake Shore. Unfortunately, the weather report turned ery bad Tuesday morning. I decided to take US23 along Lake Huron and come home. The ride down US23 was pure torture. I was having a great time riding with my 20D & 17-40 hanging from my neck until the first deer ran out in front of me. I stopped to think about the ride. The speeds got a lot slower! Some time later, I turned toward the lake to see some lighthouse point park. I thought a home owner was a total A-hole for putting a plastic deer out as a lawn ornament. No, the head moved. When I hit the airhorn, the deer ran right, then left right in front of me. Fortunately, I had stopped by that point. Even more worried about the deer, I was completely mentally drained half way to Standish where I'd pick the freeway back up. Finally stopped in Alpena for food. Taco Bell! The clouds to the south continued to get darker. South of Alpena, the deer situation got better. I was in large groups of vehicles heading south, so I figured the animals would stay away from the sound. I finally got to I-75 south. Everything was great. Then I took the US23 south split and headed toward I-96. The rain started. I stopped to dump the camera in a bag; it was sitting on my luggage after Cheboygan to avoid being decapitated should a deer run out in front of me. I'm sure a Canon neckstrap will do serious damage in a motorcycle/deer collision. The rain, heading south at **mph, was like a hundred needle pricks a second. Between my speed and the extra drag of the cargo box on the back of the bike (it is slightly wider than I am), I lost approx 8mpg. I was pushing the gas tank to the max. I got to I-96 east, then I-275 south. Getting back to I-96 east (I-96 has an eight mile kink to the south), I lost throttle response. I killed the engine and coasted at **mph to the Newburgh Road exit ramp. The bike had just enough momentum to get to a business park at the corner of Schoolcraft and Newburgh. No fuel. The speed and drag killed the tank. If I had gone five mph slower, I would have made it the extra two miles to the Shell Station at Levan and Plymouth. My wife showed up with the lawnmower gas can. Off I was! 790 miles when I hit the driveway.
